What is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra is the Indian tradition of building and placement, set down in Sanskrit texts going back well over two thousand years and still consulted daily across the subcontinent when a house is designed, a business opens or a family moves in.
Its organising idea is the Vastu Purusha Mandala, a grid laid over a plot or a room in which each direction carries a quality and a presiding deity. North is associated with Kubera and wealth, east with the rising sun and health, southeast with Agni and fire, southwest with stability and relationship, and so on around the compass.

It is a newer layer on an old system, and it is popular precisely because it works in a flat you do not own and cannot rebuild.
